Born in Fremont on June 18th, 1940 to Lyman H. Heine M.D. and Ceola E. Heine, he graduated from Fremont High School in 1958, earned his bachelor of arts degree in political science and English from Johns Hopkins University and his masters and doctorate in political science from the University of Nebraska. Dr. Heine taught at Fresno State University from 1968 until his retirement in 2004, specializing in European studies and international relations. He was chairman of the department from 1977 to 1979, was elected and served as Chairman of the Academic Senate of the Fresno campus and represented CSUF on many statewide committees, including the Statewide Academic Senate.

In 1987, Dr. Heine was appointed by California Governor, George Deukmejian to a two-year term on the Board of Trustees of the California State University System. He was only the second faculty member to serve as trustee and was reappointed to a second term.

Although active in the organizational aspects of higher education, his primary interest was in teaching his students and increasing their awareness of the larger world. He served as Director of the California State International Programs for the Scandinavian countries in Uppsala, Sweden and was instrumental in establishing the London Semester program at CSUF, traveling with the students and helping them understand European politics and culture. He was respected and beloved by students and faculty alike.

He was a kind and loving husband to his wife, Ardis, whom he married in 1966 and who survives him. Together they shared many wonderful experiences. He is also survived by his brother Edward and wife Monika of Munich, Germany; their son Benjamin of Berlin; sister-in-law Jani Stukas and husband Hercules of Minneapolis; their son Nicolas of London, England and mother-in-law Marie Feye of Columbus, Nebraska.

A memorial service will be held on Monday, May 4th at 2p.m.at Ludvigsen Mortuary in Fremont with private graveside services in Hooper. The family requests that donations be made to a charity in lieu of flowers.

I was fortunate to be both a student and friend to Dr Heine at Fresno State. We played tennis, swam, shared pizza and beer and great conversation for 2 years. He would let me be a radical alternative to his classes, and we developed a special bond. The word would be a better place if we had more Lymans.

What an outstanding career! My recollection of Lyman's personality is, however, that he would not have been prideful despite those accomplishments. Brothers Larry and Robert Brandert extend their deepest sympathy as do I. Sincerely, Carol Brandert

Edward, I am sorry that your brother passed away this last week. My guess is that you two were close and I understand there will be a void for you. I would be there for the memorial service except I already had plane reservations for Fl on Saturday - Wednesday. In liew of a "card", I hope you will not consider this email message "cold" but I know you are up with the times. I , however, am still working on it. Take care, Kathy Moll

Family of Lyman, I was so sorry to hear of Lyman's passing. He has left many people with fond memories. He and his family have always been very kind and caring people and in reading his obituary I can see that kindness and caring had continued through his lifetime. As suggested by his family, in lieu of flowers a memorial will be sent to Childs Saving Insitue charity in his memory. My sincere sympathy is expressed to each of Lymans family and know you are included in my prayers. Caren Lillie, class of 1959
