Verna was born in Nebraska on April 7, 1928, and grew up on the family farm near Ithaca. Her parents were Oral and Otto Berlin. Her only sister, Ardis, died in 1965. Verna earned her two-year teaching certificate at Luther College in Wahoo and taught school in Eagle, where she met Harold Wilken. They were married in June 1949. They lived in Elmwood where Verna was a homemaker, seamstress and mother to their two children. She completed her BA at the University of Nebraska in 1966 and then taught school in Valley and in Louisville. After Harold's death in June of 1969, Verna moved to Lincoln, where she worked at the Miller & Paine store in her favorite department - fabrics.
Verna married her second husband, Robert Gohr, in January of 1978. Later they moved to Canon City, Colorado and lived there for many years. In the late 1990s Verna and Bob moved to Fremont, where Bob died in November 1998.
Verna was happy attending plays and concerts in town. She also enjoyed activities at the senior center and at Stanton Tower, where she moved after Bob's death. She was very active in Sinai Lutheran Church, singing in choir, folding bulletins, holding office in Ruth Circle, and sewing quilts for charity. She will be missed by her many family and friends.

Verna is survived by
her daughter - Carol and husband Norman Janoff, of Phoenix, AZ,
her son - Allen and wife Lauri Wilken of Lincoln,
five grandchildren,
three great-grandchildren,
and various nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services will be held at Sinai Lutheran Church, 950 East 8th Street, Fremont, on Wednesday, November 12, at 1:00 pm. Interment will follow at the Elmwood Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday 1 hour before the service at the church.

I will surely miss Aunt Verna, especially around the holidays. I always felt that she was a connection to my mom, who passed away over 40 years ago. I always enjoyed visiting with her about her life on the farm (the same farm where I grew up), attending country school (once again the same one I attended), teaching school, etc. She passed on to me some of her special school supplies, which are still being used today by one of my friends. Her biggest highlight to discuss was always her children and grandchildren - her face always lit up talking about their various activities and achievements.

We will sure miss Verna at our holiday tables. We always enjoyed having her out. It was only a few months ago I teased her about her schedule would wear me out. We are so glad she enjoyed life to the end.
