Ray was born July 11, 1936 in Omaha to Ray and Marie 'Bierbach' Nelson. He was raised in Omaha and graduated from Omaha North High School in 1954. He attended Omaha University (now University of Nebraska at Omaha). On April 28, 1956 he married Barbara Watson in Omaha. After their marriage Ray went to work for Union Pacific Railroad as Sales Manager. The couple lived all over the United States before returning to Omaha in 1983. After Ray retired from Union Pacific he went to work for the Omaha Chamber of Commerce for a brief time. The couple then moved to Woodcliff and Ray worked for the Greater Fremont Development Council. Ray retired again and they moved into Fremont in 2001.

Ray was a member of the Woodcliff Lions Club, Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Fremont Elkhorn Valley Railroad and the Fremont Coin Club.

Son-in-law - Eric Petrie of Houma, LA.
3 Sisters - Sharon South of Tucson, AZ.
Judy and husband Bill Connick of Tucson, AZ.
Joyce and husband Pete Konrath of Tucson, AZ.
8 grandchildren
1 great grandson

Ray was preceded in death by his parents and a daughter Debra S. Petrie.

The funeral will be 10:30am Tuesday July 21, at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Fremont. The Rev. Timothy Gierke will officiate. Graveside services will be held 2:00pm at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Omaha. Memorials are suggested to Good Shepherd Lutheran Church Community Life Center Kitchen Fund and the Woodcliff Lions Club. Visitation will be on Monday from 3:00pm to 8:00pm with family receiving friends from 6pm to 8pm at the Ludvigsen Mortuary Chapel.
