He was born June 27, 1932 in rural North Bend to Bernhard and Marie (Gollenstede) Popken. He was baptized August 7, 1932, and confirmed April 14, 1946 at St. John Ridgeley Evangelical Lutheran Church. Stan was a 1949 graduate of Scribner High School and farmed with his father. He worked at Scribner Co-Op and Scribner Implement Co. He served in the U.S. Army for two years, spending a year with the 23rd Quartermaster Group at Headquarters in Seoul, Korea.

Volunteer Fireman for 23 years, served in various capacities with the Uehling Lions Club, the Uehling Business Club and American Legion Post #196. He served on the Church Council of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Uehling and sang in the church choir.
In 1988 Stan and his wife moved to Fremont after having sold the Implement business in 1986. They became members of First Lutheran Church. He did part-time work in sales with Air Comfort Company and was crop/hail insurance agent with Uehling Insurance until retirement in 2007.
During the years, he enjoyed playing softball with the church league and Hillside Dairy; and was in league bowling and golf.
