Virgene Schuette, of Fremont, formerly of Mead, died on Wednesday, February 5, 2020 at Methodist Fremont Health.

Virgene Lorene Schuette was born April 13, 1930, a gift of God to her parents, Gustav and Verna (Spath) Legband, in Snyder, Nebraska. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Snyder. She graduated from Snyder High School. She was a graduate of Immanuel School of Nursing in Omaha. Virgene worked as a registered nurse at Immanuel Hospital, Omaha, and later at the Student Health Center at UNL. She married Kenneth W. Schuette on July 7, 1957 at St. Peter's Lutheran Church. Their marriage was blessed with four children: David, Naomi, Karen and Valerie.

Virgene was known for her care and compassion. Her most treasured roles in life were being a wife, mom and grandma. She also cherished her role as sister to Lois. Her genuine love for others was shown through her quiet manner and in always putting others first. She shared her God-given gifts with others in service to her church and community. She was a member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Wahoo and served there in many ways, including as a Sunday School Superintendent, church treasurer, and member of the LWML. Virgene served on the Board of Education for Mead Public Schools and was part of the Mead Library Board. She worked part-time for the United States Postal Service in Mead. She and Kenneth enjoyed traveling to Barbershop contests and to various sites during their retirement years.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband Kenneth. Those who remain to grieve her loss and rejoice in the gift of her life are: son David (Alice) Schuette of Lincoln, NE; daughters, Naomi (Robert) Schroeder of Jansen, NE; Karen (Bill) Hartwig of Fremont, NE; Valerie (Ron) Sukup of Winnetoon, NE. Grandchildren: Noel Johnson; Autumn Johnson; Karlene (Justin) Sommerfeld; Jocelyn, Kaitlin and Leah Sukup, and great-grandson Greyson Sommerfeld; Sister and Brother-in-law Lois and Orlando Mueller; Sisters-in-law Luella (Gerald) Jahnke and Joyce Schuette; Brothers-in-law Larry (Kay) Schuette; Leon Schuette; Delbert (Sally) Schuette; numerous nieces and nephews, and many friends.

Virgene was called out of this life into eternal life as a gift of God's grace through faith in Jesus Christ, on Wednesday, February 5, 2020, at the age of 89 years, 9 months and 20 days, and she has received the consummation of her Baptism, the crown of eternal life. Her body will be lovingly laid to rest at Immanuel Lutheran Church Cemetery in rural Hooper on Saturday, February 8, 2020 at 9:30 AM to await in peace the Day of the Resurrection. Her funeral will be held on Saturday, February 8, 2020 at 11:30 AM, at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Fremont, Nebraska, with the Rev. Zachary Courie officiating.

Visitation will be Friday with the family present from 5pm to 8pm with at the Ludvigsen Mortuary Chapel in Fremont. Memorials are suggested to The Lutheran Hour or Redeemer Lutheran Church Wahoo building fund.
