Janice was born March 5, 1938 in Schuyler, Nebraska to Lloyd and Effie 'Foust' Hoops. She was raised in the Webster area and graduated from Scribner High School in 1955. After high school she was a nanny until she married Robert Smith on November 4, 1956. After her marriage Janice worked as a nurses aid at the Dodge County Hospital Annex (now Dunklau Gardens). The couple moved to Valley for a short time then back to Fremont. Janice continued to work at the hospital.
