Robert J. ‘Bob’ Flittie, age 83, of Fremont, Died Thursday, November 5, 2026 at home.
Bob was born July 9, 1943 in San Antonio, Texas. At a young age his parents moved to Brookings, South Dakota where he was a Cub Scout and Boy Scout. He sang in the school and church choirs throughout junior high and joined the men’s Glee Club in senior high. Bob was also an all-state school photographer for the paper and yearbook. He graduated from Sioux Falls Washington High School in May of 1961. The fall of 1961 he attended University of South Dakota-Vermillion and later transferred to South Dakota State-Brookings where he did campus TV reporting. After he graduated from South Dakota State he worked for KELO TV as a cameraman, director, and news anchor until 1970. 1970-71 he worked for KOTA in Rapid City doing radio news and TV weather.
Following the events of the 1972 Black Hills Flood, he went into insurance sales full time and ran for Rapid City City Council where he hosted Rosalynn Carter, wife of Jimmie Carter. After one year of being an insurance salesman, he decided it wasn’t for him so he went back to radio full time at KWAT in Watertown. After that he moved to Yankton where he worked at WNAX for 8 years. In Yankton he met Tammy Lynn Barnum and they fell head over heels for each other. They moved to Pender, Nebraska and then West Point where they got married at Grace Lutheran Church by Rev. Carl Kramer. They had two children together, Elizabeth and Hunter. After moving to West Point he worked at KTIC doing news radio for 10 years. He also sang as a bass in the Cuming County Choraliers.
He retired from KTIC and moved the family to Fremont so Tammy could pursue her dream job. He had several hobbies including gardening, cooking, reading, golfing, singing, and watching his favorite NFL team, the Minnesota Vikings. After a few months, he decided he wasn't ready for retirement so he went back to work at KHUB radio in 2005 where he did what he loved until the end. Bob will be remembered by his community as he was very compassionate about being involved and gave a lot of time volunteering.
In his own words, Bob wants to be remembered for loving his family and cooking every night. Church for singing and speaking. Work for always being on time and for his on-air work during storms and floods. Radio for ability to share advice that helps listeners, for being kind and understanding to the audience.
Visitation will be Sunday, November 8, 2026 at the Ludvigsen Mortuary Chapel with the family from 2pm to 4pm. Bob’s Celebration will be Monday, 10:30am at Salem Lutheran Church in Fremont.
