Elmer was born to George and Matilda 'Suhr' Hilbers on December 10, 1918. He was born on the family farm where he has lived all his life. He attended District 18 School, and Hooper High School, graduating in 1937.

He served in the United States Army during WWII with the 835th Engineers where he was a medical tech. He saw action in many places around the world. After the war, Elmer returned to the family farm.

He was married on February 13, 1949 to Coletta Ott in the Grace Lutheran Church in Hooper.

He loved fishing. He also enjoyed hunting, softball, bowling, and golf.

Elmer was a lifelong member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church (north of Hooper). He was baptized and confirmed there, and had been active in the choir. He was a member of the American Legion of Scribner and the VFW of Hooper.

Elmer was preced in death by his parents, George and Matilda; by a brother Oltman; 3 sisters, Olga Kramer, Dora Hasemann, Emma Johnson; by a son-in-law - Steve Flores.

The funeral will be 10:30 A.M. Monday June 30, 2008 in St. Paul's Lutheran Church (north of Hooper) with Vicar Judy Johnson officiating. The committal will follow in the St. Paul's Cemetery with US Flag Presentation. Visitation will be in the Ludvigsen's Hooper Funeral Chapel in Hooper on Sunday from 3pm to 8pm with family receiving friends from 4pm to 6pm.
