He was born January 21, 1915 on a farm northwest of Elkhorn, Nebraska to William and Amanda 'Gottsch' Winterburn. Robert graduated from the Elkhorn Public Schools in 1932, and lived and worked on area farms until 1938 when he went to work for Cornhusker Hybrids.

On October 17, 1941, he was married in Omaha in Louise Christensen. They made their home in Elkhorn until November of 1942 when Robert entered the service with the United States Army. Louise lived in Omaha while Robert was gone. He served nearly two years overseas in Germany and France. On his return to the states in December of 1945, the Winterburns moved to Fremont. And in January of 1946, he went back to work for Cornhusker Hybrids. In 1953, he went on the road as district supervisor until 1956 when the company was sold. Then he went to work with Tekseed Hybrid Co. of Tekamah, Nebraska in the same capacity until 1976, when he was moved into the office as the assistant sales manager until retiring in January of 1980. His wife Louise, retired in 1985, after 20 years as the secretary at Howard Elementary School in Fremont.

Robert was preceded in death by his wife Louise in March of 1998, by a brother Walter, and a son-in-law Jon Boettner.

There will be a visitation at the Ludvigsen Mortuary in Fremont Friday (today-Sept. 19, 2008) from 3 to 8 PM with the family receiving friends from 6 to 8 PM. A private family graveside service will be 10:30AM Saturday
(Sept. 20th) in Memorial Cemetery. Memorials are suggested for the American Cancer Society.
