Valenda Poppe

Valenda was born July 22, 1923 on the family farm northeast of Scribner to George and Martha 'Hilbers' Tonjes. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul's Lutheran Church north of Hooper. She grew up on the family farm and graduated from Scribner High School in May of 1940. After graduation she continued to work for her parents on the farm and also worked for her neighbors for a couple of years. She then worked for Peterson Drug Store.
Valenda married Donald Poppe on June 1, 1947 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church. After their marriage the couple moved to a farm south of Scribner. They then moved to Valenda's parent's farm in 1962 and farmed together there until moving into Scribner in 1992.
Valenda was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church. At St. Paul's she taught Sunday school and was Sunday School Secretary. She was a member of St. Paul's WELCA and sewed many quilts for the church to be donated.
Survivors: Husband - Donald of Scribner Daughter - Janice and husband Joe Smeal of Scribner and their daughters Amanda and husband Preston of Fremont and their son Aiden Andrea and fiancé' Bret of Fremont Son - Wayne and wife Linda Poppe of Chattanooga, TN. and their sons Chris and wife Shizuka Craig Nicholas all of Tennessee Sister - Grace Gunderson of Lyons, NE. Brother - Norman and wife Norma Tonjes of Scribner Sister-in-law - Ann Tonjes of Scribner Brother-in-law - Ed Fahrenholz of Allen Valenda was preceded in death by her parents and 2 brothers (George & Clarence) and 2 sisters (Evelyn and Mildred)
The funeral will be on Saturday at 10:30 am at St. Paul's Lutheran Church north of Hooper. Vicar Judy Johnson will officiate. Burial will follow in the St. Paul's' Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be on Friday from 3pm to 8pm with the family receiving friends from 6:30pm to 8pm at Ludvigsen Scribner Funeral Chapel.
