She was born April 9, 1941 in Collegeville, Pennsylvania, the eldest of three daughters born to Calvin and Elizabeth Yost. She was graduated with a B.A. from Ursinus College in Collegeville, Pennsylvania; with an M.A. from the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; and with a Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin in Madison, Wisconsin. She married Jerry Mulliken of Nickerson in June of 1968, and lived in a home they built themselves on the family farm south of Nickerson.

She taught English at Midland Lutheran College, worked in academic administration, including a period as Academic Dean at the College of Saint Mary in Omaha, and recently retired as executive director of the Fremont Area Community Foundation.

Betsy was an enthusiastic traveler and spent many vacations in Italy with Jerry and their friends, as well as numerous trips throughout the United States. In recent years she was an avid birder.

She was a member of Rotary International and the Nebraska Ornithologists' Union. She valued the many friends she made in the local academic community, as well through her work with the Fremont Area Community Foundation and with the Nebraska amateur and professional ornithologists.

Survivors include her husband Jerry, sister and brother-in-law Ellen and Bill Matten of State College, Pennsylvania, sister and brother-in-law Susan and Roland Bergner of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, mother-in-law Nellie Mulliken of Nickerson, brother-in-law Jack and wife Pamela Mulliken of Nickerson, as well as numerous nieces and nephews on both sides of the family.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Calvin and Elizabeth Yost of Collegeville, Pennsylvania, and her father-in-law Alan Mulliken of Nickerson.

A memorial service will be held at 10 AM Monday (May 4, 2009) at the First Congregational Church, UCC, in Fremont, Nebraska, preceded by a private graveside service in Fremont. There is no public visitation.

The family requests that memorials be sent to the Fremont Area Community Foundation, 605 N. Broad St., Fremont, Nebraska, in lieu of flowers. Ludvigsen Mortuary is in charge of the arrangements.
