Lavaun was born July 20, 1936 in Scribner to William 'Bill' and Caroline (Sindelar) Osterloh. She was raised in Scribner and attended various country schools in the area, graduating from Scribner High School in May of 1954. After high school Lavaun taught one year of rural school in Dodge County. She married Harlan J. Skinner on May 22, 1955. The couple lived in Lincoln while Harlan finished school at UNL. The couple returned to the Ridgeley Township until Harlan was drafted into the military. They moved to Kileen, Texas and then to various places in Europe, returning to the Scribner area in 1958. During the following years Lavaun belonged to the Mrs. Jaycees, Jr. Women's Club, Ridgeley Extension Club and several card clubs. It was during this time the couple welcomed their son Dana to the family.

Harlan passed away in February of 1977. Lavaun then moved to Aurora, Colorado and married Jim Thompson. They later divorced. Lavaun and her son Dana lived in several different communities. While in Colorado Lavaun was involved as a Cub Scout Den Mother, PTA, Newcomer's Club and Welcome Wagon.
