Alice May Bartling

August 27, 1929 - October 3, 2023

Alice May Bartling, 94 of Fremont, NE, after living at Shalimar Memory Care since January this year, was called to heaven to be with our Lord and Savior on October 3, 2023.

Alice was born in rural Hooper, NE on August 27, 1929 to Eduard and Clara (Wittmann) Fischer. She was baptized September 10, 1929 and confirmed in her Christian faith on April 18, 1943. She married Norman H. Bartling on September 29, 1948 at 1:45 pm at St. Paul Lutheran, Winslow, NE. After a honeymoon trip that took them through Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, Arkansas, Missouri and Iowa they started their lives together on the family farm in Washington County. Together they raised three daughters there. After their girls were married, she worked as a bookkeeper at Lazy-R-Feeds (Rasmussen Feed Mill) for 16 years, before she and Norman retired and moved to Fremont in 1988.

After Norman passed away on August 17, 1991, she was lonely until she began dating Burnell Lallman in 1999. They enjoyed each others company for many years until he went to heaven in 2012.

Alice was an excellent seamstress. She made all her girls' clothes and even square dance dresses for herself and matching shirts and sports coats for Norman. She and Norman square danced for many years until her hearing got bad. She baked and decorated many beautiful wedding cakes for many years, also making birthday, confirmation and anniversary cakes. She loved doing crossword puzzles until her eyesight got worse. Her "FUN THING" to do was mowing her lawn; which she did until October 24 last year, when she went to live in assisted living at Nye Courte, for 2 months prior to moving to Shalimar Memory Care on January 3 this year. She was a "Jill of All Trades". She seemed to be able to do whatever she set her mind to do.

She and Norman also served many years as Lamplighters for AAL (now Thrivent) for many local congregations of The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod.

In 2007, after the hurricane in New Orleans, at age 78, she went with a busload of volunteers from Trinity on a work trip to help clean up after the devastation. You might guess what her job was: "lawn mowing" and painting.

If you asked her what made her the happiest, she would say it was when all of her family, kids and grandkids would come to enjoy family meals at her house. Family was very important to her. She was an excellent cook.

She is survived by her daughters: Kitty (Larry) Matzen of Bennington, Betty Denison of Blair and Yvonne (Randy) Bryce of Litchfield Park, AZ; 4 grandchildren: Corey (Stacy) Rink of Woodland, ME; Sally Moore of Edmond, OK; Tammi (Jeff Ellis) Japp of Blair; and Kristina Denison of Martell, NE; step-grandchildren: Gregory (Amanda) Bryce; Jeromy Bryce; & Bryan (Tiffany) Bryce; 8 great-grandchildren: Samantha, Blake, and Shane Japp; Luke, Paul, Nate and Faith Moore; & Brandon Denison; sister-in-law, Joyce Fischer and many nieces and nephews.

Alice is preceded in death by Norman, her parents, three sisters: Edna (Irvin) Panning, Helen (Allen) Mueller, and Mildred (Victor) Bartling, her brother, Leroy, and all her brothers-in-law and one sister-in law.

Throughout the years since Norman died, she was very much blessed with neighbors that helped her in so many ways. Our family would like to give a "Special" THANK YOU to these neighbors: Chuck Danskin & Marlys Brandt, Lynn & Cindi Lamprecht, Bob & Donna Denison and "former neighbors": Don & Elke Dickmeyer, and Roger & Mary Lou Carlson.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. October 18, 2023, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Fremont. Visitation will be held at Ludvigsen Mortuary in Fremont from 3-7 pm on October 17,with family receiving guests from 5-7 pm. **** Lunch at Trinity will follow the service**** with the burial following the lunch at the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery east of Winslow.
