Lola Mae Scheer (Giesselmann)
June 16, 1931 - May 2, 2023
Lola Mae Giesselmann Scheer was born to Henry and Viola Gerwick on June 16, 1931 in Snyder, Nebraska. She was baptized into the Family of God on July 19, 1931 at St. Peter's Lutheran Church. Work was hard to find during the Depression, so her family moved a number of times. She lived in Snyder and Fremont and by sixth grade had gone to four different schools - Snyder Public School, Washington, Clarkson, and Trinity Schools in Fremont. She loved going to school and graduated from Snyder High School in 1949. She went to Wayne State Teachers' College and then taught in a one-room schoolhouse near Snyder in District 41 for several years.
She married Larry Giesselmann on June 15, 1952 and had six children: Dean, Marlene, Kent, Kevin, Paul, and David. Lola Mae was very involved in many church activities at St. Peter's, including the LWML and the LLL and multiple community organizations. She was Den Mother for the Cub Scouts for many years. After Larry's death in 1987, Lola Mae married Melvin Scheer in 1993 and moved to Arlington, Nebraska, where she was active in several organizations at St. Paul Lutheran Church. She also spent much time volunteering in the St. Paul School Library and the Lions Club in Arlington.
Lola Mae enjoyed traveling as well as cheering on her Nebraska Cornhuskers and Midland Volleyball. She especially loved spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She took to heart Deuteronomy 6:6-7 ''These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.'' She would always share a Scripture lesson with the children at family gatherings and the legacy she left for her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren will be greatly treasured.
Lola Mae Giesselmann Scheer passed away peacefully on May 2, 2023 at Providence Place in Fremont, NE. She is preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Viola Gerwick and husbands Larry Giesselmann and Melvin Scheer. She is survived by her six children: Dean (Deanna) Giesselmann, Marlene (Rick) Pyatt, Kent (Pat) Giesselmann, Kevin (Mary Jo) Giesselmann, Paul (Paige) Giesselmann, David (Vicki) Giesselmann, 14 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, sisters Rita (Richard) Johnson and Sharon Ash.
