Lloyd Melvin Hartmann, 83, of Hooper
passed away Thursday, June 23, 2016, at Fremont Health Medical Center.

He was born Aug. 14, 1932, to William and Anna (Lahn) Hartmann on their farm in southwest Hooper, NE. He attended the District 64 elementary school across the road for eight years and went on to graduate from Hooper High School in 1949. He attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's College of Agriculture, receiving an associate's degree in agriculture. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War period as a radio operator.
Following his discharge, he worked in Denver until his mother's illness and death in 1957 brought him back to the farm. He began selling livestock feed on a part-time basis before becoming a territory manager for Walnut Grove Products in Windom, MN. In 1965, he began feed sales with Supersweet Feeds, with a territory out of Redwood Falls, MN. He relocated to Redwood Falls, where he met Bonnie Beliveau from Willmar.

Lloyd and Bonnie were married June 17, 1967, in Hooper. They had three children while in Redwood Falls, Perry, Steve and Amy. In 1975, the family relocated to Pierre, S.D., when Lloyd took a job as a sales manager for Funk Seeds International. At that time, Marsh Family Supply farm store and feed mill in Hooper came up for sale and Lloyd and Bonnie purchased the business, renaming it Hartmann Farm Service. They moved to Hooper and their children attended school there, graduating from Logan View High School. They eventually sold the business and after a time in seed sales Lloyd was hired as the noxious weed superintendent for Dodge County.

Lloyd was baptized and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church in Hooper, which became a part of Redeemer Lutheran Church, to which the family belonged. He was a long time Adjutant of American Legion Post #18 in Hooper, having also served as Commander and member of the firing squad. He was a past county Legion Commander. He was a member of Voiture 1018 of the 40 & 8 and had held the office of Chef de Gare. He was active in the Nebraska Weed Control Association and received the state outstanding superintendent's award. He was a member and former officer of the Hooper Commercial Club and belonged to the Elkhorn Valley Golf Club. He was a Master Gardener and a member of the Men's Garden Club of Fremont. Lloyd was a Husker fan and liked to hunt and fish, having made several pack trips into the mountains hunting elk. He continued to fish for walleye in Minnesota's Lake of the Woods every year. His favorite pastimes were working in his garden and playing euchre, but his greatest enjoyment was in visiting his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Bonnie of Hooper; three children, Perry (Kathy) Hartmann of Redwood Falls, MN.; Steve (Stacey) Hartmann of Superior, CO.; and Amy (Joe) Grof of Plainview, NE.; eight grandchildren Ashley (Jeff) Grof Holt, Alika Hartmann, Anlis (Mitch) Nelson, Bret (Ali) Grof, Keenan Hartmann, Darian Grof, Delaney Hartmann and Teagan Hartmann; and four great grandchildren Lexyn Grof, Hadley Holt, Rylan Despres and Aria Nelson.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Anna Hartmann and brothers, Donald Hartmann and Clarence Hartmann.

The funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Hooper. Visitation will be 2-6 p.m. Sunday at Ludvigsen's Hooper Funeral Chapel, with family present from 4-6 p.m. Burial will be in Hooper Cemetery with Military Honors.

Memorials are suggested to the 40 & 8 Nurses Training Fund and the American Legion Post No. 18 in Hooper.
